Ms. Day's first grade class worked in the computer lab using our new Dell Optiplex 7010s. They experimented with 3D and 2D shapes using the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives website created by the University of Chicago. It's a great learning tool. Check it out!

Many first grade classes incubated chicken eggs in their classrooms in April. They turned the eggs three times daily and waited patiently for twenty-one days for the eggs to hatch. Ms. Gillen's students typed up the chicken facts they learned in a Microsoft Word documents and then recorded their favorite chicken fact into a PhotoStory to share with each other and their parents. Ms. Day's first grade class has been using the Samsung SDP-860 Document Cameras a lot lately! The video below shows Grace sharing her picture and thoughts about what she'll do when she's 100 years old. Ms. Day is also using the camera to help her students increase their reading fluency. Students are recorded reading from text. They can then review the video, discuss what they like and don't like, what they may or may not change in their reading and then have an opportunity to re-record. Students are highly motivated to improve their performance and love hearing and seeing themselves on the computer screens. Lots of fun and learning going on in first grade! |
